I've been taking Methotrexate for just over 5 weeks. I knew it might take up to 12 weeks to take any effectConfused but my symptoms have definitely been getting worse. Is that common?Confused

Hi

I have heard it can be worse before it gets better...

I wonder, (sensitively!) if it could be a hormonal cycle related thing- Im far worse around my premenstral days.

Dear Fiona
I have been taking it for 7 weeks (orally) and 2 weeks (by injection) so 9 weeks in total. I can't say I've noticed a significant improvement in joint symptoms so far. My consultant wants to see me in another 6 weeks as she thinks that if it is going to work well for me it should have done so by week 15. So it's quite early days for you yet. Hope that helps. Hi Fiona

Methotrexate builds up in the system slowly and for the first couple of months is likely to have little effect. Consequently your joints continue to suffer. Usually by 13 weeks or so you should be feeling some benefit but it can take as much as 5 months if you are only on a low dose. The dosage is sometimes increased quite slowly to help avoid side effects.

Hope you feel some benefit soon,

Lyn x

Hi Fiona,

I've been taking MTX for 4 years now, around the 12 week marker I found the difference in my joints. I started on a very low dose and built up slowly week by week until I reached 15mg. Try taking it at night before you go to sleep, you then sleep through the side affects. I used to find I felt sick the day I took it. It could last for hours and the sun bothered me too. A high sun factor is important. I can feel a bit tired the following day I take it, but I do not really have any problems now...... Other than the fact I hate taking it, but I know I would be in a sorry state without it, so needs must. Smile

Hope you settle down soon.

Take care Lorna x

Hi Fiona,
It took about 4 months before I found the benefit of the MTX, so yes patience is a virtue, but darned frustrating! Hang on in there, your bloods should show a drop in your CRP which proves its working. You may also need some pain relief and anti-inflammatories to help out as well. Keep going Fiona, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Yes, it can take up to a few months even to see the benefits but it is a worthwhile medication to pursue...

Sometimes the rheumy gives a depo when one begins on it to dampen down the inflammation and give it a head start...

They have to titrate the dose to allow it to settle in the body and so they can see whether one can tolerate a certain amount.

Love and prayers,

Amanda
